This homemade curry bread is inspired by Japanese and Indian flavors—simple, quick, and requiring no special skills. Perfect as a side for soups, curries, vegetable spreads, or simply enjoyed with butter. It has a moist crumb, a tender texture, and a warm curry aroma that’s flavorful without being overpowering.
300 g all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1½ teaspoons curry powder (mild or medium)
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
250 ml milk (dairy or plant-based)
1 egg
60 ml vegetable oil or melted butter
2 tablespoons plain yogurt or thick cream (optional, for extra moisture)
Optional add-ins:
1 small onion, finely chopped
1–2 tablespoons grated cheese (cheddar, gouda)
chives or fresh coriander
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a loaf pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, curry powder, salt, and sugar. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, oil (or butter), and yogurt if using.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix briefly, just until combined—do not knead. If adding onion, cheese, or herbs, fold them in at the end.
Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 45–50 minutes, until golden and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Remove from the pan and let cool slightly before slicing.
